Okay, so I got my hands on this OMEGA Speedmaster Apollo 8 “Dark Side of the Moon” watch the other day. It’s a copy, but man, it looks and feels just like the real deal. Let me tell you about how I got it and what I think of it.
I’ve always been a space nerd, and the Apollo 8 mission? That was huge! They were the first to orbit the moon, and this watch is a nod to that. I saw someone talking about it online, mentioning it’s the 50th-anniversary edition or something, and I just had to check it out.
So, I started digging around. I found a guy who gets these original order copies. I was a bit unsure at first, but after chatting with him and seeing some pictures, I decided to go for it. This thing has the 3869 movement inside. It’s not automatic, which makes the watch thinner, and that’s cool with me.
- Getting the Watch: I contacted the seller, and we talked about the details. He sent me some pictures, and the watch looked great. The price was right, so I placed the order.
- Unboxing: A few days later, the package arrived. I opened it up, and there it was. The watch was even better in person.
- Checking it Out: This watch has a see-through dial, and you can see all the gears and stuff inside. They made it look like the moon’s surface, which is pretty awesome.
The back of the watch has some words on it, like “APOLLO 8” and some other stuff I don’t remember. The seller mentioned something about laser stuff on the movement to make it look like the moon’s surface. Both the front and back of it are done this way, so it’s like having a mini-moon on your wrist.
I’ve been wearing it for a few days now. It feels good on my wrist, not too heavy. And let me tell you, people notice it. I’ve gotten a few “Nice watch!” comments already. I heard that the real Speedmaster watches hold their value well, especially the old or special ones. I don’t know if this copy will, but I’m not planning on selling it anyway.
What I Really Think
Honestly, this watch is awesome. It looks cool, it’s got a story behind it, and it didn’t cost me a fortune. Plus, it reminds me of that amazing Apollo 8 mission every time I look at it. For a space geek like me, that’s pretty darn cool.
